There are many treats to be enjoyed at Disney World. One of the best that we have found is the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake from Liberty Tree Tavern. It is sweet, salty, cold, and warm all at the same time. And it is big enough for the entire family to share!
Magic Kingdom Is a Great, But…
Magic Kingdom is the most iconic of the Orlando parks for many reasons. It was the first park, it has all of those classic rides, and of course there is the castle! There is so much to love about Magic Kingdom. However, all of that popularity does come with some drawbacks.
If you have been to Walt Disney World recently, you know that crowd levels have fully recovered from the pandemic. It can be overwhelming just to be among that amount of people. Additionally, there is a lot going on in this comparatively small park. Dapper Dans are singing, parades are marching, attractions are fighting for your attention, and much more. You are going to need a break in order to avoid burnout and give yourself the best chance to make it to evening fireworks.
Our Solution: Dine at Liberty Tree
If you are lucky enough to be staying at a Magic Kingdom area resort, your best option might be to take a mid-day break back at the hotel. If, instead, you want to find a break within the park, we suggest checking out Liberty Tree Tavern in Liberty Square.
Liberty Tree is a table service, all-you-care-to-enjoy restaurant. The meals are served family style, meaning everyone gets to try everything, and the servers will bring more of whatever your family wishes. The grand finale of each meal is the coveted Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake.
How to Make the Toffee Cake at Home
We tend to find ourselves to be pretty sad after family vacations. There is so much anticipation and excitement beforehand. Disney has a way of being even more amazing than you expected. The downside of that is how depressed you are likely to be after your trip! Our suggestion is to recreate favorite Disney recipes at home to reminisce. Just make this cake and settle in with a DFBGuide video on YouTube and your sorrows are sure to go away. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients
- Bottom:
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 1 egg
- 1 stick butter (unsalted, melted)
- Topping/Filling:
- 8 oz. softened cream cheese
- 1/2 stick butter (unsalted, melted)
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup Heath bar pieces
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
Serves: 8-10 | Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 40-50 minutes |
- Combine cake bottom ingredients and add to greased 13″x9″ cake pan. This mixture should have the consistency of cookie dough.
- Add cream cheese and butter to mixer with a whisk attachment. Mix until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time while mixing. Add vanilla. Mix in powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time. The end result will be a thick batter.
- Gently stir in chocolate chips and heath bar pieces.
- Pour onto cake bottom. Bake at 325F for 40-50 minutes.
- Dessert will be finished when top is golden brown and beginning to crack.
- Serve!
Tips for Recreating this Recipe
The base of the cake is a cookie texture so spreading in your pan can be a bit difficult. We used a silicone spatula to help with this. Start checking for doneness around 35 minutes – ours took closer to an hour to reach the golden brown and cracking state.
How Does Ours Compare to Liberty Tree Tavern?
We found this to be a very close recreation of the cake at Liberty Tree. The same warm, sweet, salty delicious dessert you can find right in the middle of Magic Kingdom. The one thing we found it to be missing was the crispy edges that you can see in the first picture. Baking in ramekins instead of one large pan should yield crispier edges.
Final Thoughts
Liberty Tree Tavern is one of our favorite ways to relax in Disney World. Although the whole experience is relaxing and delicious, the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake is definitely my favorite as a dessert lover. Recreating some Disney recipes can be difficult and time consuming, but this one is actually pretty straight forward.
We hope you will try this and treat yourself to some delicious Disney dessert served warm topped with vanilla ice cream, chocolate/caramel drizzle, chocolate chips, and heath pieces. Let us know how yours turns out!
